Time off for study or training
If you:
- are 16 or 17 years old
- haven't got a qualification at level 2 (5 GCSEs at grade C and above or equivalent)
- get a job without training when you leave school,
the law says you have the right to reasonable time off work to study or train towards a level 2 qualification. You need to agree with your employer the best way to do this. Connexions can advise you and your employer.
What is a Level 2 qualification?
- 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C;
- an NVQ Level 2; or
- a BTEC First / BTEC National.
The qualification you decide to go for must be one that's going to help you in your future career, but it doesn't have to be one that's connected with the job you're doing now.
What is 'reasonable' time off?
There are no fixed rules. It could be day release to college, it could be block release. You might have the chance to learn on the job. It's pretty flexible but it has to be fair to both you and your employer, so the two of you need to agree on what you're going to do.
How do you go about sorting out the training?
You'll find there are lots of different opportunities available in your area. Your local Connexions Centre can tell you all about them. One of the ways of getting the skills and qualifications you need is through NVQ work based learning or an Apprenticeship.
Where do I start?
Talk to your employer. If you want to get some specialist advice first, contact your local Connexions Centre. They can also advise you what to do if your boss doesn't seem very happy with the idea.
