14-19 Implications for Careers Education and Guidance.

The Government’s changes to education for young people aged 14-19 are explained in the 14-19 Education and  Skills White Paper ( Feb 2005) and further detailed in the.  14-19 Education and Skills Implementation Plan  (Nov 2005).The main points  are:

That the Government wants to:

  • Ensure that  every young person masters functional maths and english before leaving education.
  • Improve vocational education.
  • Stretch all young people and help universities differentiate between the best candidates.
  • Re-motivate disengaged learners.
  • Ensure delivery of a national entitlement of GCSEs,  A level and 14 specialised diplomas.

What’s happening in Northumberland?

Locally Northumberland 14+ Network is co-ordinating a strategy for delivering these changes. The Learning and Skills Council, the Local Education Authority, Northumberland College and Connexions are all involved. The 14-19 agenda has already begun to be delivered through partnerships across our county – schools, colleges and learning providers are offering students courses which involve study at partner institutions as well as their own.

Implications for CEG:-

  • A greater range of course choices will complicate the decision making process for key stage 4 students and above -  good quality careers education and guidance are more important than ever.
