The National Framework for Careers Education and Guidance –“ Careers Education and Guidance in England”
Careers Education and Guidance in England - A National Framework 11-19
The National Framework is part of the Government initiative ‘14-19 Opportunity and Excellence’. Changes to the 14-19 curriculum and a wider choice of learning routes available to young people from an earlier age will require them to have the knowledge, understanding, skills and information to make sound learning, career and lifestyle choices. A planned programme of careers education provides a framework of learning outcomes to support these aims.
What is it? The framework provides a national consensus on what career learning should cover for 11-19 year olds. It aims to support schools, colleges and work based learning providers improve the quality of career learning and is designed as a toolbox of materials which can be used as a checklist to help you review a particular aspect of careers work, or the whole programme in your organisation. There are three aims:
That young people should be able to:
o Understand themselves and the influences on them –(Self Development)
o Investigate opportunities in learning and work (Career Exploration).
o Make and adjust plans to manage change and transition (Career Management),
In the document each learning outcome is accompanied by a suggested activity which is not mandatory, exhaustive or prescriptive.
Next steps: You could use the framework to review your current practice, and build this in to your department improvement plan. If you have any questions or comments about the framework, please get in touch with the CEG Development Co-ordinator 01670 798232.
