Employing a Young Person 16-18

Leaving school and starting work isn’t easy! Connexions aims to help young people make this transition a smooth one.  We are the specialist organisation for job and work based learning vacancies for young people aged 16-18.

If you are interested in employing a young person, our Personal Advisers will be pleased to discuss your options and if you are new to this area of recruitment they will give you the benefit of their expertise built up over time working with young people in the labour market in their locality. Our vacancy service is free. Contact one of our Connexions centres – 01670 798180.

To summarise the options:

  • You could employ a young person and offer them training - this could be your own in-house courses or a part-time NVQ course, for example at a local college.
  • You could employ a young person and use the Apprenticeship structure organised by the National Apprenticeship Service.
  • You could employ a young person but not offer them any formal training.
  • You could act as an employer “placement” for a young person who is preparing to enter the labour market through Foundation Learning.

We can put you in touch with local learning providers who can explain more about the implications for you about Apprenticeship and Foundation Learning.

http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/ is a website set up by the National Apprenticeship Service to support young people, their parents and employers to find out more about  Apprenticeships – there is a whole section of useful info aimed at employers.

Young people aged 16-18 who are employed, not receiving any training and do not have NVQ level 2 qualifications (or 4 A-C GCSEs) are legally entitled to Time off for study to help them achieve level 2 .
