Which A Level, which course of higher education?

The range of courses available in Higher Education is enormous and constantly expanding. What follows is only a small selection of some of the most commonly chosen. This information is offered as a general guideline only. As institutions and individual courses may vary in their requirements it is essential to double check using reference books, websites or prospectuses. In addition to single subject courses, it is possible to study most subjects in combination with almost anything else eg Chemistry with French, Computer Science with Music, in which case entrance requirements may differ from those outlined.

  • Although 2 AS levels are deemed the equivalent of one 1 full A level, many courses will still require full ‘A’ level passes in certain subjects, e.g. Medicine, English, Modern Languages. Where a subject is given as preferred or useful, AS is likely to be acceptable.
  • Some AS/A-levels may not be universally accepted, e.g. General Studies, Critical Thinking and Specialist subjects. It's worth checking if they will be acceptable for traditionally academic courses such as Law, Medicine, and Veterinary Science.
  • Many courses will require 5 GCSE at A-C grades, often to include English, Maths and/or Science to meet the professional requirements of certain careers.
