Q: Will I have to take exams or can I do coursework?

Q: Is there any difference between specialist (sometimes called vocational) and general (sometimes called academic) GCSEs?
A:

Only the subjects you are studying! New GCSE subjects such as Engineering, and Health and Social Care help you learn more about an area of work but they are not committing you to a career choice and they are the same level of study as GCSEs in subjects more familiar to you such as History or French. Go to Courses and Qualifications for more information. Check which subjects are on offer in your school.

Q: Do you need to complete a GCSE to continue to an advanced level course?
A:

Check requirements in your Connexions resource area or ask your Personal Adviser for help.

Jobs and Careers

Q: Do I need to know what job I want before I choose my options?
A:

It can be useful to have some career ideas but it’s okay to change your mind too! Universities, colleges and employers prefer a balanced range of subjects and keeping your options open will allow you to choose from a wider range of jobs later. Choose subjects you enjoy and think you will do well in.

Q: What subjects do I need to take for the career I’m interested in? If I take a particular subject how can I find out what kinds of job will be available to me?
A:

Your Connexions resource area in school or your local Connexions Centre is a good place to check out your career ideas and the subjects you’ll need. Some occupations will require certain subjects at GCSE and some subjects, although not a specific requirement, may be useful. Computer programs such as Careerscape show you how your favourite subjects link to careers.

Q: If I don’t take a particular subject will it stop me getting the job or career I want?
A:

Some occupations will require certain subjects at GCSE. These are usually the compulsory subjects (English, Maths, Science, ICT). Speak to your Connexions Personal Adviser who will be able to give you advice and information. Check requirements in your Connexions resource area. Choosing a balanced range of subjects will keep your options open.
