Working with young people with special educational needs

Connexions Northumberland is committed to working with young people, families and partner agencies to promote equality of opportunity for all young people especially those who are vulnerable or in need.

In Northumberland Personal Advisers work in district teams across the county with young people with Special Educational Needs in high schools, special schools, local FE colleges and in community settings.

Personal Advisers work with young people with special educational needs from the age of 13 years until they have made the transition to adult life up to the age of 25 years.  They work to identify young people’s strengths and support needs, to identify their potential, set achievable goals, to raise their aspirations and to broaden horizons.

In addition to the district teams there is a small central specialist team who support young people with complex needs in specialist school, college, university and out of county placements. In addition the specialist team provides support and advice to Personal Advisers in the districts working with young people with complex needs.

Moving Forward is a guide to the transition process produced by Connexions Tyne and Wear for the Connexions Partnerships in the Northern Region.
